Dinner with DTM

Last week an invite turned up from the Brands Hatch PR team offering me a chance to have dinner in London with the Brit DTM drivers - Mercedes’ Gary Paffett and Audi’s Oliver Jarvis and Katherine Legge.

Here at BLZEEBUB we have one golden rule - never turn down a media event that is offering food. Easily pleased? Us? Never...

I'll freely admit that whilst we have covered DTM at Brands before, I am not too familiar with the people invovled so this was a good chance to spend a good bit of time with them over some fantastic food (no Brands Hatch burgers this time!) and a few beverages.

From the DTM management they told me why we weren't seeing DTM on the Brands GP circuit - and its nothing to do with noise... apparently its because they want ticket buying fans to be able to see as much as possible and to that end, the Indy circuit is perfect. Can't argue with that really, the Indy circuit is about the only place in motorsport where you can see nearly all the action.

Gary Paffett was an interesting guy to talk to. As well as currently running second in the 2010 DTM championship Paffett is test driver for the McLaren F1 team and he revealed some interesting stuff about the inner workings of F1 - a side of things that even in motorsport media you rarely get to hear about. Apparently Lewis Hamilton is not just an all round nice guy for his fans and the media, he is genuinely an all round nice guy - which surprised me actually, I've only met Hamilton at a PR stunt.

Gary also likes Twitter, but not for posting messages about when he is on the loo.

Of Oliver and Katherine I discovered that they share a pad in Switzerland, although apparently "not like that" and that Katherine has a bit of thing for chips.  I think she was just making that up because she didn't look like a lady who ate chips a lot! She also likes snowboarding and wants to hold the next media event up a mountain in Germany - think I'll just stick to the apres ski on that one Katherine...

Oliver also, like me, confesses to sometimes finding it hard to remember which side of the road to drive on in Europe and until recently wasn't aware of the laws regarding speed limits in certain European states... He also told me that he had speed limiter problems on his old A1GP car - you have to hold the button down rather than toggle a switch, so it does seem that limiting his speed is a recurring problem. Shouldn't be a problem on Sunday though Oliver, you go as fast as you want!

All in all it was a very enjoyable geiler evening with great food and great company.

Am off tommorow to get started on our coverage of DTM at Brands - hope my hangover has gone by then!
